Accident – Death – Obituary News : A man strangled a woman before beating her to death with the ceramic lid of a toilet in a hotel room in Washington, D.C., according to recent court documents. The Metropolitan Police Department responded to a report of an unconscious person in the 1600 block of New York Avenue Northeast at approximately 11:20 a.m. on Friday. Upon entering a hotel room at the location, they discovered a woman, identified as 36-year-old Romaine Maddox, with apparent trauma to the body. Sadly, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

William Barrett, aged 59, has been taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder in connection with Maddox’s tragic death. Maddox was found deceased on Friday by an employee at the Ivy City Hotel. Detectives conducting the investigation determined that Barrett and Maddox arrived at the hotel at around 7:20 p.m. on Thursday. Barrett informed investigators that he and Maddox had been involved in a romantic relationship for over a year.

Court records indicate that the couple entered room 123 at the hotel and were not observed on surveillance footage until approximately 10:20 p.m. Maddox can be seen leaving the hotel room completely nude at around 10:20 p.m. and was locked out of the room for a brief period before re-entering and remaining inside until just after 1 a.m. At 1:15 a.m., Maddox left the room in only her underwear, followed by Barrett exiting the room nude, seemingly searching for her. They both returned to the room five minutes later, with audio recordings capturing sounds of a woman pleading for help.

Following this, nobody was seen entering or exiting the room until Barrett left shortly after 9 a.m. A hotel employee entered the room at 11 a.m., quickly shutting the door and fleeing down the hallway upon witnessing the scene, as revealed in the affidavit.

Police arrested Barrett after reviewing surveillance footage and collecting evidence from the room, including the broken toilet tank cover. Barrett was found with blood on his head and face, as well as several other incriminating items at the time of his arrest.

Barrett allegedly confessed to authorities that an argument between him and Maddox turned physical after checking into the hotel. He claimed that Maddox began assaulting him, prompting him to choke her with his belt until she lost consciousness. When Maddox regained consciousness and screamed for help, Barrett proceeded to strike her with the toilet tank lid multiple times, resulting in fatal injuries.

Maddox suffered blunt force trauma to the forehead, head deformities, and multiple lacerations, according to court documents. Barrett admitted to falling asleep after the attack and waking up to find Maddox motionless and cold.
