ISLAMABAD — In a chilling display of power, the Taliban conducted a public execution in the snow-covered city of Shibirghan, located in the northern Jawzjan province of Afghanistan. The event, which took place at a sports stadium, drew thousands of spectators who witnessed a man convicted of murder facing his final moments.
The scene was surreal as the brother of the murdered man stepped forward and fired five shots from a rifle, bringing the convict’s life to a brutal end. Security was tight around the stadium, ensuring that the execution proceeded without interruption.
History of Public Executions
This public execution marks the fifth such event since the Taliban’s resurgence in Afghanistan in August 2021. Despite initial promises of a more moderate regime, the Taliban’s rule has been marred by severe punishments meted out in public, reminiscent of their oppressive tactics from the late 1990s.
As U.S. and NATO troops withdrew from the country after two decades of conflict, the Taliban wasted no time in enforcing their draconian laws, inflicting fear and terror on the population.
When approached for comment, Taliban government officials remained elusive, refusing to address the international outcry over their barbaric practices.
International Condemnation
Reacting to the public execution, U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric expressed strong disapproval, stating, “The public nature of the execution is extremely heinous, and we continue to stand against the use of the death penalty.”
Despite mounting criticism from the international community, the Taliban’s supreme court defended the execution as a lawful act, approved by the highest courts in the country and the Taliban supreme leader, Hibatullah Akhundzada.
Recent Punishments
The public execution in Shibirghan follows a series of brutal punishments inflicted by the Taliban. In Ghazni province, two men convicted of murder faced a similar fate, with their relatives participating in the execution by firing shots at them in front of a crowd.
Additionally, cases of floggings and lashings have been reported in Balkh and Laghman provinces, where individuals were subjected to public humiliation for alleged immoral acts.
The United Nations has repeatedly called upon the Taliban to cease these inhumane practices, urging them to uphold basic human rights and dignity.
