A mother from Mississippi has taken legal action against police and city officials by filing a $2 million federal lawsuit, alleging that her young son was unjustly arrested for public urination.

LaTonya Eason recounted an incident that occurred in August 2023 when she had to quickly attend to a matter at an office building in Senatobia. The visit was meant to be brief, but her son, identified as “Q.E.,” found himself in a predicament when he needed to use the restroom. With no public facilities available, the boy felt compelled to relieve himself discreetly.

The situation escalated when a police officer witnessed the act and initially issued a verbal warning. However, additional officers arrived at the scene and insisted that the 10-year-old should be taken into custody for his actions.

Despite the boy’s young age, he was arrested and placed in a jail cell for up to one hour before being charged in youth court as a “child in need of services.” Subsequently, he was released back to his mother’s care.

The lawsuit filed by Eason and her son alleges that they experienced significant emotional distress and trauma as a result of the arrest, including embarrassment, harassment, PTSD, and shock.

Eason’s lawsuit has been lodged in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Mississippi against the City of Senatobia, Police Chief Richard Chandler, Lt. Zachary Jenkins, and four other officers from the Senatobia Police Department.

Seeking $2 million in damages, the legal action includes allegations of excessive force, negligence, and false arrest.

FOX Television Stations has reached out to the City of Senatobia for their response to the lawsuit.
