Keokuk Man Arrested After Police Chase Across Iowa and Illinois

KEOKUK, Iowa (KWQC) – A Keokuk man was taken into custody following a dramatic police chase that spanned across state lines into Illinois and back to Iowa.

Authorities in Keokuk initiated a traffic stop at around 10 a.m. on Sunday on a gray Chevrolet Trailblazer at the intersection of North 5th Street and Grand Avenue. The driver, identified as 45-year-old Travis E. Scott, was found to have felony arrest warrants and a suspended driving status.

According to a media release, Scott then proceeded to evade the police and led them on a pursuit into Illinois. Additional law enforcement agencies in Illinois were called in to assist in the chase.

The chase continued into Illinois on North Highway 96 before looping back into Keokuk at the Keokuk/Hamilton bridge. A tire deflation device was deployed by a Keokuk officer on the Iowa side of the bridge, but Scott managed to evade it and kept driving.

As the pursuit reached Main Street, Scott collided with another vehicle at the intersection of 7th and Main Streets. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in this incident.

Scott then went on to strike a Keokuk officer’s squad car before losing control and hitting a stop sign at the intersection of North 8th Street and Grand Avenue. Despite the damage, Scott attempted to flee once more, but was eventually apprehended by the police.

During a search of Scott’s vehicle, certified narcotics K9 Officer Zsolt indicated the presence of illegal narcotics, which were subsequently discovered.

Scott is facing a slew of charges including eluding (a class D felony), interference with official acts causing bodily injury (a serious misdemeanor), possession of a controlled substance (second offense, Methamphetamine – an aggravated misdemeanor), possession of a controlled substance (second offense, Marijuana – a serious misdemeanor), possession of drug paraphernalia (a simple misdemeanor), driving while suspended (a simple misdemeanor), as well as felony warrants for Escape From Custody out of Des Moines County and Violation of Probation out of Lee County. Additionally, Scott was cited for various traffic offences related to the incident.

The Keokuk Police Department received assistance from the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office, Hamilton Police Department, Fort Madison Police Department, Lee County Sheriff’s Office, and the Lee County Consolidated Dispatch during the course of the investigation.
