This unsettling event has prompted safety experts to emphasize the importance of Florida’s Move Over Law. According to Bonnie Frank, a driver education specialist with the Florida Safety Council, drivers are required to either move over one lane or slow down to at least 20 miles below the speed limit when passing stopped law enforcement, emergency vehicles, tow trucks, and any other vehicles displaying warning lights, as well as disabled vehicles on the side of the road.

In 2023, the Florida Highway Patrol issued 2,712 citations for violations of the Move Over Law across the nine counties within our viewing area, resulting in 176 crashes. Frank highlighted that distractions such as phone usage or a lack of attentiveness often contribute to these incidents.

The deputy involved in this recent incident fortunately escaped serious injury, but the outcome could have been much worse. Frank emphasized that failing to move over can lead to further accidents and potential fatalities, underscoring the importance of giving emergency personnel the space they need to carry out their duties safely.

It is crucial for drivers to be vigilant and adhere to traffic laws to ensure the safety of everyone on the road. Download our free news, weather, and smart TV apps for the latest updates, and stream Channel 9 Eyewitness News live for real-time coverage.
