In a disturbing turn of events, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in Singapore has opened an investigation into a domestic worker accused of fatally beating her employer’s dog in January.

The incident was brought to light through a Facebook post by veteran animal activist Derrick Tan, a close friend of the dog’s owner.

The dog’s owner, known as Jason (pseudonym), had recently hired a domestic worker to assist with household chores and care for his beloved pet poodle, Boyboy.

On the fateful day of 22 January, Jason left for work as usual. However, later that evening, his girlfriend made a tragic discovery – Boyboy had passed away unexpectedly while she was resting.

Initially attributing the dog’s death to natural causes, Jason and his girlfriend decided to cremate their beloved pet. However, upon closer inspection at the crematorium, Jason noticed something alarming – a crack in Boyboy’s skull.

Feeling perplexed as Boyboy had always been in good health, Jason decided to review the CCTV footage to uncover the truth behind his dog’s sudden demise.

Shocking CCTV Footage Reveals Horrific Abuse

Upon viewing the footage, Jason was horrified to discover that Boyboy had not died from natural causes as initially believed. Instead, the video showed the domestic worker repeatedly striking the dog’s head with her hands and a makeshift rod, followed by hanging the poor animal on the balcony railing while filling a bucket with water.

Expressing his shock and disbelief, Derrick Tan, the animal activist, stated, “The helper was hired to care for Boyboy, and it is appalling that she would resort to such cruelty towards a defenseless animal.”

Subsequently, Jason wasted no time in filing a police report and informing the relevant agency about the actions of the domestic worker. However, he was met with indifference from the agency, which failed to acknowledge the severity of the situation.

SPCA Takes Swift Action Against Animal Abuse

Upon being informed of the incident on 26 January, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) condemned the alleged actions of the domestic worker as “brutal” and “appalling.”

They advised Jason to file a police report against the perpetrator and report the case to the Animal and Veterinary Service (AVS), responsible for enforcing animal cruelty laws in Singapore.

Aarthi Sankar, the Executive Director of SPCA, affirmed the organization’s commitment to collecting evidence for the case and supporting Jason throughout the legal proceedings.

Repeat offenders may face fines of up to S$30,000 and imprisonment for up to three years. SPCA Singapore has called for the maximum penalty to be imposed on those found guilty of animal abuse.

The organization has urged pet owners to remain vigilant in ensuring the safety and well-being of their pets, especially when delegating care responsibilities to others.
