The Conviction

After weeks of intense testimonies, jurors at the U.S. District Court’s Eastern Division of New York in Brooklyn reached a verdict on Tuesday. Karl Jordan, Jr., identified as Mizell’s godson, was found guilty of firing the fatal shot that ended the life of the iconic DJ. Ronald Washington was also convicted for his role in orchestrating the murder as an act of revenge after being excluded from a drug deal. Another individual, Jay Bryant, is set to face trial separately in 2026.

The Tragic Incident

On October 30, 2002, Mizell, aged 37 at the time, was brutally shot in the head at close range by a masked assailant, later identified as Jordan. The shooting also injured Mizell’s friend and assistant, Uriel “Tony” Rincon, who was present during the attack. The only witnesses to the crime, Rincon and Lydia High, an employee at Mizell’s JMJ Records, initially withheld information due to intimidation by Jordan, leading to the case remaining unsolved for years.

The Legacy of Run-DMC

With Mizell’s beats, Run-DMC, consisting of Joseph “Run” Simmons and Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, rose to fame as one of the most influential rap groups in history. Their hits, including “Walk This Way” with Aerosmith, “Rock Box,” “It’s Tricky,” and “King of Rock,” cemented their place in music history.

Both Jordan and Washington are facing a minimum of 20 years in prison, with sentencing scheduled for a later date.
