An Oregon man arrested for alleged home invasions in Idaho and Washington

An Oregon man was taken into custody by Boise police officers following an investigation into accusations of breaking into the homes of young women.

Jacob Smart, a 38-year-old resident of Astoria, Oregon, was apprehended about an hour outside of Portland on various outstanding warrants, including four counts of burglary, three counts of grand theft, and one count of trespassing in Idaho, as per a press release from the Boise Police Department.

Smart is believed to be involved in multiple criminal activities in Washington and Oregon and was identified as a person of interest in a recent home invasion case in Cowlitz County, which is approximately an hour north of Portland.

Boise police had previously stated that Smart was responsible for burglarizing five homes belonging to women in the area, during which he allegedly stole items such as a firearm, debit and credit cards, personal identification, and underwear, as reported in prior news.

Arrest and Capture

The Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Office reported on Facebook that in the early hours of Monday, a nearby police department received a call about a “prowler” near a mechanic shop. Surveillance footage later identified Smart as the suspect, seen driving his Suzuki Sidekick.

Subsequently, another police officer located Smart’s vehicle behind a truck stop, leading to Smart fleeing on foot. Law enforcement agencies collaborated to set up a containment area and initiated a search, during which an accidental call from Smart’s phone helped track his location back to the truck stop.

After a citizen reported seeing Smart running across Interstate 5, authorities pursued him to Temco’s property, a grain terminal in Kalama, Washington. Smart then sought refuge in a nearby plant, prompting the evacuation of employees. Despite threats towards officers and civilians, Smart was eventually apprehended by a K-9 team following the deployment of chemical agents.

Legal proceedings and further investigation

Following his arrest, Smart received treatment for minor injuries and was subsequently booked into Cowlitz County Jail on the outstanding warrants. Authorities are currently looking into additional charges against Smart and are investigating him for other potential crimes.

It remains uncertain when Smart will be extradited to Idaho to face the charges against him. Anyone with information related to this case is urged to contact detectives at the Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Office on 360-577-3092.
