Accident – Death – Obituary News : The Sudbury community was left devastated by a tragic incident that took place last week in a quiet neighbourhood. The victim of a fatal three-alarm fire has been identified as 74-year-old Hema O. Shahani, as confirmed by the Middlesex District Attorney’s office.

The fire, which occurred on Feb. 21 around 5 a.m., took the life of Shahani, who was unable to escape due to limited mobility. Two brave individuals—a Sudbury police officer and a family member of Shahani—attempted to rescue her, but tragically sustained injuries in the process.

Local investigators have determined that the fire was accidental in nature, with the most likely cause being a space heater left on overnight. The two-story, single-family home lost heat on the first floor overnight, leading to the overheating of the space heater coils. The fire then spread to a nearby closet and continued from there.

A collaborative effort involving various officials was made to investigate the fire, including the Sudbury Fire Department, Sudbury Police Department, State Police Fire & Explosion Investigation Unit, State Police assigned to the Middlesex DA’s office, and Fire District 14 investigators. Mutual aid companies from neighbouring areas also provided assistance at the scene while nearby firefighters helped with station coverage.

State Fire Marshal Jon M. Davine emphasized the importance of having working smoke detectors in every home to prevent such tragedies. “Our hearts go out to Ms. Shahani’s family and every family that loses a loved one to fire,” said Davine.

The incident serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of fire safety measures and the devastating consequences that can result from accidents. It is crucial for everyone to take precautions and ensure the safety of their homes and loved ones.
