Elderly Woman Dies in Sudbury House Fire Caused by Space Heater
Authorities have identified the victim of a tragic house fire in Sudbury last week as 74-year-old Hema O. Shahani. The blaze, which claimed Shahani’s life, was likely caused by a circuit overheating due to the use of a space heater.

Shahani, who had limited mobility, was unable to escape the fire that engulfed her home on Goodman’s Hill Road. Despite efforts from a family member and a Sudbury police officer to rescue her, Shahani was found dead in one of the bedrooms.
Sudbury Fire Chief John Whalen expressed his condolences, stating, “On behalf of the Sudbury Fire Department and our community, I want to express our deepest condolences to Ms. Shahani’s loved ones. They lost a cherished family member, and all our thoughts are with them right now.”
The fire broke out around 5 a.m. last Wednesday, with firefighters responding to a 911 call reporting heavy flames at the single-family home. Shahani’s family had been using multiple space heaters to heat the house after losing heat on the first floor the previous night.
Investigators believe the fire started inside a wall and spread to a closet, eventually engulfing the entire home. It was determined that the overheating circuit powering one of the space heaters was the likely cause of the blaze.
State Fire Marshal Jon Davine emphasized the importance of having working smoke alarms in every home, stating, “This was a tragic loss for [Shahani’s] family and the community. Please, if you do one thing today, check to be sure you have working smoke alarms installed on every level of your home.”
