Springfield Police Mistake Airsoft Gun for AK-47 in Arrest of Edward Blatch Jr.

Springfield, MA (WGGB/WSHM) – Springfield Police breathed a collective sigh of relief after initial reports on Monday night indicated that a man was in possession of an AK-47, only to discover it was an airsoft gun.

After receiving a report around 9 p.m. that a man had an AK-47 and a bulletproof vest on the 0-100 block of Belmont Avenue, police spoke with a victim who stated that the suspect, 36-year-old Edward Blatch Jr., had pointed a gun at her during a dispute in an apartment.

Upon investigation, officers found what was thought to be an AR-15 style rifle on the kitchen table. However, upon closer inspection, they realised it was an airsoft gun. Despite this, Blatch Jr. was found in possession of valium and was subsequently arrested. During the booking process, he allegedly assaulted an officer, leading to additional charges.

Blatch Jr. is now facing weapon, assault, and drug-related charges as a result of the incident.
