In a heartbreaking turn of events, a Minnesota man named Christian Thomas Dahm has pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter in connection to a house fire that claimed the life of his 79-year-old mother. The guilty plea and sentencing

During a hearing in Ramsey County District Court, Dahm entered a guilty plea as part of a deal with the prosecution. This plea deal would potentially allow his attorney to argue for a sentence outside of the state’s sentencing guidelines. Additionally, Dahm will be responsible for restitution of the home as well as neighboring properties damaged in the fire. He could face up to 11 years in prison for the second-degree manslaughter charge.

The details of the incident

According to reports, Dahm was working on a fishing pole over a pan of motor oil when he lit a cigarette, leading to the start of the fire. His father, who was present at the scene, indicated to responders that Dahm had started the fire. Patricia Dahm, Christian’s mother, was rescued from the burning home and taken to the hospital in critical condition. Tragically, she later succumbed to complications from smoke inhalation and burns.

Investigation and aftermath

Charging documents revealed that Dahm’s parents had been concerned about his potential use of methamphetamine. When they went to check on him in the garage, an explosion occurred. Dahm, who is currently serving time at Minnesota Correctional Facility-Stillwater for a probation violation in a separate case, is awaiting sentencing scheduled for May.
