Memphis Police Department Provides Update on Hospital Employee Carjacking Incident

The Memphis Police Department has recently disclosed new information regarding a carjacking incident that took place last week, targeting a hospital employee. According to reports, a group of armed suspects were involved in the incident, with one 15-year-old individual already facing charges in connection with the crime.

The young suspect, whose identity has not been revealed, has been charged with several offences, including carjacking, aggravated robbery, employing a firearm during a dangerous felony, and evading arrest.

The victim, an employee at Methodist University Hospital located in the Medical District, recounted the harrowing experience that occurred just before dawn on Monday, February 19. She was in the hospital parking lot unloading her vehicle when a red Hyundai Venue pulled up in front of her. Three individuals emerged from the vehicle, brandishing firearms and demanding her car keys and money.

After seizing the victim’s money, the assailants fled the scene in her 2024 Cadillac Lyric, leaving behind the Hyundai Venue. Later that same day, law enforcement officers located the stolen vehicle abandoned at Lamar and Central Avenue. Subsequently, a perimeter was established in the vicinity, leading to the apprehension of a male suspect seen walking with a firearm.

The captured individual, a 15-year-old male, was found to be in possession of the victim’s key fob at the time of his arrest. Additionally, a handgun was discovered in close proximity to the suspect. Police noted that the teenager was dressed identically to the armed suspect captured on hospital surveillance footage.

While the teenager is currently in custody, the other suspects involved in the carjacking remain at large. In response to the incident, Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare issued a statement expressing their dismay over the involvement of one of their employees in the crime. The healthcare organisation reiterated their commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of individuals on their premises, pledging full cooperation with law enforcement authorities in the investigation.
