The Tragic Avalanche Incident Near Castle Mountain Ski Resort

An unfortunate incident took place in the backcountry near Castle Mountain ski resort in the Alberta Rockies close to the B.C. border, where an Alberta man lost his life after being buried by an avalanche while snowmobiling. The incident occurred on a fateful Saturday afternoon, turning a day of outdoor adventure into a tragic event.

The Location of the Avalanche

The avalanche occurred at the head of Gardiner Creek, nestled in the picturesque Castle Wildland Provincial Park, approximately 13 kilometres south of Castle Mountain Resort. The stunning natural beauty of the area was overshadowed by the sudden and devastating force of nature that claimed the life of a 46-year-old man from Magrath, Alta.

The Harrowing Escape

The man was snowmobiling with another individual and two children when disaster struck around 1 p.m. MT. Amidst the chaos and confusion of the avalanche, the two children managed to escape along with one of the men. Tragically, the other man was unable to free himself from the snow’s icy grip.

The Race Against Time

Authorities were alerted to the avalanche at 5:22 p.m. that day, as daylight began to fade. Due to the treacherous conditions and diminishing light, a full-scale search-and-rescue operation could not be immediately launched. The coming dawn heralded the start of a frantic search effort on Sunday morning.

The Search and Recovery

Crowdsnest Pass and Pincher Creek RCMP, along with Southwestern Alberta Regional Search and Rescue teams, joined forces to locate the missing man. With the assistance of a K9 unit from Fernie Search and Rescue and Alberta Conservation personnel, the search intensified. Tragically, the man’s body was discovered just before 1.30 p.m. on Sunday, bringing a somber end to the search efforts.
