Man Found Guilty in Shooting Death in Joppatowne

In a tragic incident that shook the community of Joppatowne, an Edgewood man has been found guilty in the shooting death of William Doran, 29, in December 2021. The incident took place in the 500 block of Dembytown Road, where Harford County sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a single vehicle collision.

Discovery of the Crime

Upon arrival, medics discovered that Doran had been shot below the eye. Despite their efforts to revive him, Doran tragically passed away an hour later. The investigation led Harford County Sheriff’s Office detectives to uncover belligerent text messages sent to Doran’s phone from a person identified as “Reject P”, later identified as Alton William Cumbo, Jr. of Edgewood.

Arrest and Charges

Further evidence, including cell phone data placing Cumbo at the scene of the crime, led to his arrest and subsequent charges of first-degree murder, second-degree murder, first-degree assault, and second-degree assault. It was revealed that Cumbo and Doran were known to each other, adding a layer of complexity to the case.

Verdict and Sentencing

After a five-day trial, Cumbo was found guilty of second-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and illegal possession of a firearm. His sentencing has been scheduled for April 22, bringing some closure to the victim’s family.

State’s Attorney Statement

State’s Attorney Alison M. Healey expressed pride in the office’s work in putting violent criminals like Cumbo behind bars. She emphasized the importance of holding offenders accountable and ensuring the safety of the community. With Cumbo’s conviction, another murderer has been removed from the streets, making the community a safer place.
