Kochi: A tragic incident took place on Sunday afternoon in Kothamangalam, where a Kochi Metro employee drowned in the Periyar river. The deceased, identified as Tony John (37) from Ezhimala in Kannur, lost his life in a devastating accident.

According to the FIR, John had gone to Kothamangalam along with four of his colleagues. The tragic incident occurred at Vettampara in Pindimana around 3.30pm when he was washed away by the strong currents of the river. The fire force was called in to assist in the recovery of his body, which was found and declared dead at Kothamangalam taluk hospital at 6pm.

The Kothamangalam police have registered an FIR for unnatural death under Section 174 CrPC. An officer with the Kothamangalam police stated, “Since it was a holiday, John had gone to the house of a friend in Kothamangalam along with others. They then went to Vettamabara to take a bath in the river. While bathing, John was washed away. Despite the efforts of one of his colleagues to rescue him, they were unable to save him.”

The body of Tony John will undergo an autopsy on Monday before being handed over to his grieving relatives.

In another unfortunate incident, a woman named Mariamma (68) lost her life after being knocked down by a private bus at Kunissery near Nedumbassery on Sunday. The victim, who was the daughter of Vareed of Kunnissery, was on her way to a church at Athani when the accident occurred. Police reported that she was attempting to cross the road when the bus struck her down. Her body was handed over to her relatives after an autopsy on Sunday.
