Charles was raised in the company of his aunt and cousin Hazel, who was a widow and worked as a teacher. In 1940, Charles found employment as a clerk at a local drugstore, possibly alongside his older brothers. However, by 1942, he had relocated to Detroit to live with his brother Hugh. It was in Detroit that he worked at the Sears-Roebuck Warehouse and registered for the draft during World War II.

During the war, Charles served as a Private First Class in the U.S. Army from December 30, 1942, until his discharge on November 14, 1945. After the war, he tied the knot with Shirley Ann Hanley, and together they welcomed three children into the world.
