Man Arrested for Fraudulently Obtaining Rice for Charity

The Enugu State Police Command has apprehended a 45-year-old man for deceiving a businessman into giving him 18 bags of rice under false pretences of distributing them to the needy.

The suspect, identified as Nnamani Joseph, reportedly approached the businessman on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2024, at a church in Ogui, Enugu. He claimed he needed the rice for charity purposes at the church.

Believing his story, the businessman supplied the 18 bags of 25 kg rice, valued at N400,000, and accompanied Joseph to the bank for payment. However, while the businessman was waiting for the payment to be processed, Joseph absconded, taking the bags of rice with him.

The businessman promptly reported the incident to the Ogui Division police, leading to Joseph’s arrest on February 20, 2024, in Emene. At the time of his arrest, Joseph had re-bagged and sold 10 bags of rice at Orie Emene Market in Enugu.

Confirming the arrest, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the spokesperson for the Enugu State Police Command, stated that Joseph would have successfully defrauded the businessman if not for the quick response of the police. The police conducted an intelligence-driven investigation, recovering eight out of the 18 bags of rice from Joseph.

Ndukwe added that Joseph and his accomplices will face charges in court once the investigation is complete. He urged residents, especially business owners, to remain vigilant and avoid falling victim to fraudsters.
