(CNN) — Recently released body camera footage from the police in Oklahoma sheds light on a tragic incident involving a teenager identified as Nex Benedict. Nex, who is reported to have identified as nonbinary, passed away on February 8 following an altercation at Owasso High School.

The circumstances surrounding Nex’s death remain unclear, as the cause of death is yet to be determined. However, an initial autopsy report has ruled out trauma as the cause of death. Toxicology and further tests are pending to determine the exact cause of the tragedy.

The Owasso Police Department has released 911 calls, body camera footage, and surveillance videos related to the incident, prompting LGBTQ+ advocates to seek answers.

The Incident at Owasso High School

The body camera footage shows Nex and their guardian, Sue Benedict, interacting with a police officer in a hospital after a fight between students at the high school. Nex recounts the events leading up to the altercation, stating that they were provoked by other students who ridiculed them.

Nex explains that on the day of the fight, they were in the bathroom with friends when the situation escalated. They poured water on one of the students after being taunted, leading to a physical confrontation that resulted in Nex being beaten up by the other students.

Despite the officer’s advice that throwing liquid could be viewed as assault, the Benedict family decided not to pursue charges.

911 Calls and Aftermath

Surveillance footage shows Nex and other students moving from the cafeteria to a restroom before the altercation took place. Nex is later seen being escorted to the nurse’s office and then leaving the school with their guardian.

In a 911 call, Sue Benedict requests an officer to meet them at the hospital on the day of the fight. In a subsequent call the next day, Benedict describes Nex as being in a medical emergency, with their condition rapidly deteriorating.

Owasso Public Schools confirmed that a physical altercation occurred in a restroom but did not disclose details of disciplinary actions taken against the students involved.

Call for Justice

A GoFundMe page has been set up for Nex and their family as investigations into the incident continue. The Benedict family has expressed concern over the details of the incident and called for a thorough and swift investigation.

Nex’s tragic death has highlighted the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals in Oklahoma, where recent legislation has been criticised for its impact on the community. Advocates are pushing for greater inclusivity and protection of LGBTQ+ rights in the state.
