Owasso High School Students Walk Out in Protest After Non-Binary Student’s Death

More than fifteen students staged a walkout on Monday at an Oklahoma high school in Owasso, following the tragic death of a 16-year-old non-binary student who was beaten in a restroom on campus.

The incident, which took place earlier this month, resulted in the untimely passing of Nex Benedict, a student at Owasso High School who identified as non-binary and used they/them pronouns. Benedict, who had been the victim of bullying at the school, tragically lost their life the day after the altercation with three girls in the restroom.

Students and 2SLGBTQ+ advocates gathered at an intersection near the high school, holding up signs with messages such as “You Are Loved” and “Protect Queer Kids.” The group is calling for action to address discrimination and bullying against transgender and gender non-conforming students in schools.

Reacting to the tragic events, the 2SLGBTQ advocacy group GLAAD released a statement expressing shock and dismay at the circumstances surrounding Nex Benedict’s death. The organisation condemned the ongoing harassment and violence faced by LGBTQ students and called for immediate steps to ensure the safety and well-being of all students.

“Students and families are out in force today having to demand the basics: to be safe from bullying and violence,” the statement read. “It is appalling and shameful that Nex Benedict endured a year of anti-LGBTQ harassment, then a brutal beating in the school bathroom.”

Investigation Underway

While the state medical examiner’s office has not yet determined the cause or manner of Benedict’s death, preliminary findings suggest that the death was not directly related to the injuries sustained in the fight. The police are currently conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the teen’s passing and will be sharing their findings with the district attorney’s office for further review.

Vigils have been held in honour of Nex Benedict, both locally in Oklahoma and across the nation, as the community mourns the loss of a young life and calls for justice and accountability.
