Students Protest Bullying After Death of Nonbinary Teen in Oklahoma School

OWASSO, Okla. — A tragic incident at Owasso High School in Oklahoma has sparked outrage and protests as students and LGBTQ+ advocates demand action against discrimination and bullying of transgender and gender nonconforming students.

More than a dozen students participated in a walkout on Monday following the death of 16-year-old Nex Benedict, a nonbinary student who tragically passed away after being involved in a violent altercation inside a school restroom. Benedict, who identified as nonbinary and used they/them pronouns, had reportedly been a target of bullying at the school.

Students and advocates gathered at an intersection near the school, holding signs with messages of support for LGBTQ youth, such as “You Are Loved” and “Protect Queer Kids.” The LGBTQ advocacy group GLAAD issued a statement condemning the harassment and violence directed towards Benedict, highlighting the need for a safe and inclusive environment for all students.

Investigation and Vigils

While the cause of Benedict’s death has not been officially determined by the state medical examiner’s office, preliminary findings suggest that it was not directly related to the altercation in the restroom. The police are conducting an investigation into the incident and will be working with the district attorney’s office to determine the appropriate course of action.
