Accident – Death – Obituary News : Pune: Alleged drug racket mastermind Sandeep Dhuney and his associates have been using a new modus operandi to produce mephedrone (MD) drugs in smaller working units after local authorities, including the police, started monitoring defunct units in industrial areas, said investigators.

Previous drug hauls involving drug kingpins Lalit Patil, Baby Patankar, and others revealed that the culprits were renting defunct industrial units in Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) areas in the state to produce MD, according to the police.

The Pune police are currently investigating a massive Rs3,676 crore drug racket following the seizure of a large quantity of MD from Pune, New Delhi, and Sangli between Monday and Wednesday last week. Nine suspects have been arrested, including the owner of a pharma plant in Kurkumbh of Daund tehsil, 75km from Pune, and a chemical expert from Dombivli.

London-based Dhuney, who was previously arrested by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) in 2016 in a drug haul in Pune, has been identified as the mastermind behind the MD racket.

According to a senior police officer involved in the investigation, instead of opting for a defunct unit, the suspects in this case chose a working one. Dhuney’s contact in Mumbai and chemical expert Yuvraj Baban Bhujbal reached out to Earth Chem Pvt Ltd owner Bhimaji alias Anil Parshuram Sable to begin drug production in Kurkumbh.

The move to use a functioning unit was aimed at avoiding heightened scrutiny from authorities such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and MIDC. Interrogations of the arrested individuals revealed how they enlisted the services of a working unit.

The police officer further explained that working factories or units that are in operation are often overlooked by law enforcement agencies as they are regularly inspected by factory inspectors and FDA officials.

The investigation also unveiled that Dhuney preferred a unit where chemical components are used to produce a variety of products. Sable’s unit was selected by Dhuney’s Mumbai-based accomplice, leading to the commencement of drug production.

In a surprising twist, a senior police officer revealed that synthetic drugs like mephedrone (MD), methamphetamine (meth), and ecstasy are now traveling from south to north in India, contrary to traditional plant-based drugs which usually move from north to south.
