Bengaluru: In a recent tragic incident, the body of a 20-year-old BTech student, Harshit Kotnala, hailing from Haldwani, Uttarakhand, and studying at Alliance University, was discovered in a partially burnt state within a eucalyptus grove near Anekal on Sunday morning. Kotnala had been reported missing since February 21, leading to a widespread search effort.

According to a Times of India report, preliminary investigations by the police suggest that Kotnala, a first-year computer science student, was brutally murdered before being set on fire. The chilling discovery was made by a passerby at Telagarahalli village, approximately 4.5 kilometres from Anekal. Authorities found a mobile phone and a backpack with his identification, including his college ID card, near the body.

Kotnala, who resided in the college hostel in Ulimaranapalli, Denkanikottai taluk, Tamil Nadu, around 8 kilometres from Anekal, was last seen leaving the hostel premises at 10:37 am on February 21, carrying a backpack. He did not attend his classes that day, prompting the college management to file a complaint at Thally police station in Tamil Nadu the next day.

Upon the discovery, Anekal police received a report from Kotnala’s father, Subodh, who identified his son by his slippers and clothes. Beer bottles and snack packets were found at the crime scene. Forensic experts collected vital evidence, including the deceased’s viscera and DNA samples from him and his parents for identification purposes.

The cause of death remains unknown due to the body’s partial burning and decomposition, pending the post-mortem report. Investigations to trace Kotnala’s activities before his disappearance involve obtaining his call details from the service provider and interviewing his acquaintances. Anekal police are also reviewing CCTV footage from the checkpoint in Tamil Nadu towards Anekal for potential leads.
