Police Commissioner’s Perspective
Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia believes that the incident was likely a “suicide by police officers” situation attempted by Holmes. He mentioned that the recording of the initial 9-1-1 call indicated a threat towards a guy at a nearby church, although the supposed individual was no longer present.
Altercation with Officers
When officers arrived on the scene, they encountered Holmes armed with a 12-gauge shotgun. Despite numerous commands to put down the weapon, Holmes proceeded to fire his gun. The ejecting round jammed the gun, prompting Holmes to raise his weapon to reload before lowering it again.
Officer Response
As Holmes raised his gun again, two officers on the scene fired multiple shots, striking Holmes. Following the shooting, responding officers immediately began administering first aid until emergency medical staff arrived.
