Trinamool Congress Leader Fatally Shot in West Bengal

A 49-year-old Trinamool Congress leader hailing from Ashoknagar in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district was tragically shot dead by a group of assailants. The incident occurred during a heated dispute over a land transaction, as confirmed by local authorities on Monday, February 26, 2024.

The victim, identified as Bijan Das, was fatally wounded during a visit to the residence of a fellow party member. Das, who held the position of deputy head of Guma 1 panchayat, succumbed to two gunshot wounds delivered at close range. The bullets reportedly struck his head and left ear, resulting in his immediate demise upon arrival at Barasat Medical College and Hospital.

An investigating officer stated, “The perpetrators responsible for this heinous act are currently at large, prompting a thorough inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident.” The authorities are actively pursuing leads to apprehend those involved in the brutal slaying.

Expressing profound sorrow over the loss, Barasat MP Kakali Ghosh Dastidar visited the hospital where Das was pronounced dead. Describing the event as a “tragic incident,” Dastidar highlighted the significant contributions made by the deceased within the party ranks.

“Bijan’s untimely passing represents an irreparable loss to our organisation. His longstanding dedication to the Trinamool Congress, spanning from his early involvement in student politics, will forever be remembered. We await the findings of the ongoing police investigation to shed light on this senseless act of violence,” remarked Mr. Dastidar.
