US Air Force Member Sets Himself on Fire Outside Israeli Embassy in Washington DC

An active-duty member of the US Air Force, identified as Aaron Bushnell, set himself on fire outside the Israeli Embassy in Washington, DC on Sunday. The shocking incident took place on the 3500 block of International Drive, NW, around 1:00 p.m. According to reports, Bushnell was heard saying, “I will no longer be complicit in genocide” before igniting himself.

The Metropolitan Police Department responded to the scene to assist the United States Secret Service after the man set himself on fire. The Secret Service officers quickly extinguished the flames, and Bushnell was rushed to a local hospital by DC Fire and EMS in critical condition. Fortunately, no embassy staff were injured during the incident.

Investigation Underway Amidst Ongoing Protests

Authorities are currently investigating the incident, which occurred amidst ongoing protests against the war in Gaza. The conflict has led to both pro-Palestinian and pro-Israeli demonstrations across the United States. This event is reminiscent of a similar occurrence in December when an individual set themselves on fire outside the Israeli Consulate in Atlanta as a form of political protest.

Israel is currently involved in a military campaign against Hamas in Gaza following a series of attacks by the Palestinian Islamist group. Israeli authorities have reported that Hamas killed 1,200 people in Israel and seized 253 hostages in a cross-border attack on October 7. In response, Israeli forces have launched a military campaign in Gaza, resulting in nearly 30,000 deaths, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.
