Tragic Avalanche Claims Life of Snowmobiler in Alberta Rockies

Over the weekend, a tragic incident occurred in the backcountry near Castle Mountain ski resort in the Alberta Rockies, close to the British Columbia border. A 46-year-old man from Magrath, Alberta, lost his life after being buried by an avalanche while snowmobiling with another adult male and two children.

Avalanche Strikes During Snowmobiling Expedition

The avalanche struck at approximately 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, trapping the man underneath the snow. The two children were able to escape with one of the adult males, but unfortunately, the victim was unable to free himself in time.

Search and Rescue Efforts

It wasn’t until 5:22 p.m. that Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek RCMP received a report of the avalanche from the surviving adult male. Due to the impending sunset, search and rescue efforts were postponed until daylight on Sunday.

On Sunday morning, a comprehensive search operation was launched, involving members of the Pincher Creek RCMP, the Southwestern Alberta Regional Search and Rescue, a K9 unit from Fernie Search and Rescue, and Alberta Conservation. The body of the missing snowmobiler was recovered just before 1:30 p.m. that day.

Earlier this month, a separate incident occurred at Castle Mountain Resort where a man found himself stranded in an out-of-bounds area after being caught in an avalanche. This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by avalanches in the mountainous regions of Alberta.
