Teenager’s Tragic Death Sparks Nationwide Vigils

Over the weekend, vigils were held across the United States in memory of Nex Benedict, a 16-year-old nonbinary student from Oklahoma who tragically passed away following a confrontation in a high school bathroom. Benedict, who used they/them pronouns, was involved in an altercation with three girls at Owasso High School, where they were reportedly being bullied.

The incident occurred on February 7 when the girls, who were teasing Benedict and their friends, were allegedly attacked after Benedict poured water on them. The following day, Benedict’s mother called emergency services to their home, reporting shallow breathing, rolling eyes, and curled hands. Despite efforts to save them, Benedict passed away.

Nationwide Support

Vigils for Benedict were organized in various cities, including Boston, Minneapolis, and Huntington Beach. The gatherings aimed to honour Benedict’s memory and raise awareness about the impact of bullying and discrimination on nonbinary individuals.

During the vigil in Huntington Beach, Kanan Durham, the executive director of Pride at the Pier, expressed the need for continuous support for the LGBTQ+ community. Durham emphasised that Benedict’s tragic death should not be the only moment of remembrance and advocacy.

Community Response

Sanj Cooper, from the LGBT advocacy group TahlEquality, highlighted the challenges faced by the community in Oklahoma, where suicide ideation is prevalent among LGBTQ+ individuals. Cooper emphasised the importance of speaking out and supporting one another in the wake of Benedict’s passing.

While initial reports suggested that Benedict’s death was not directly related to the fight, investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause. The Owasso police department is awaiting toxicology results to provide further clarity on the circumstances surrounding Benedict’s tragic demise.

Call for Action

Following Benedict’s death, there have been calls for increased support and awareness of LGBTQ+ issues in schools. All Saints Priest Janie Koch urged individuals to seek help and support one another during times of emotional turmoil.
