Drug Trafficking Network Busted in Delhi

In a recent operation conducted by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and the Delhi Police’s Special Cell, at least three individuals were apprehended in Delhi, where a significant amount of chemicals used for narcotics production was seized. This joint effort aimed to dismantle an international drug trafficking network that extended its reach across India, New Zealand, Australia, and Malaysia.

Mastermind Behind the Nexus

The mastermind of this illicit operation has been identified as a Tamil film producer, who is currently evading authorities. It is believed that this individual orchestrated the trafficking of drugs using various channels, including air and sea cargo. The network’s operations were shrouded in secrecy, with substances hidden in innocuous products like health mix powder and desiccated coconut.

Seizure of Pseudoephedrine

During the raid in Delhi, law enforcement officials confiscated 50 kg of pseudoephedrine from the suspects. Pseudoephedrine is a precursor chemical used in the production of methamphetamine, a highly addictive synthetic drug. While this compound has legitimate uses, its illegal possession and trade are strictly regulated under India’s NDPS Act, 1985.

International Cooperation

The NCB is collaborating with authorities in New Zealand and Australia after receiving information that large quantities of pseudoephedrine were being smuggled into these countries. The price of pseudoephedrine in Australia and New Zealand is approximately Rs 1.5 crore per kilogram, making it a lucrative commodity for traffickers.

Unravelling the Network

Through meticulous surveillance and intelligence gathering, a joint team of the Delhi Police Special Cell and NCB successfully uncovered the drug trafficking network’s operations. After months of monitoring, the authorities pinpointed a godown in Basai Darapur, West Delhi, where the suspects were preparing to dispatch another consignment.

Arrest and Confessions

On February 15, a raid on the godown led to the apprehension of the three suspects, all hailing from Tamil Nadu. Following interrogation, they disclosed details of 45 previous consignments sent over the last three years, amounting to approximately 3,500 kg of pseudoephedrine valued at over Rs 2,000 crore in the global market.

Manhunt for the Mastermind

Efforts are underway to capture the Tamil film producer, who is believed to be the linchpin of this drug trafficking network. His arrest is crucial in determining the primary source of pseudoephedrine and dismantling the entire operation.
