Human Remains identified After 54 Years Near Portland, Oregon

Discovery of the Remains

Back in February 1970, a Boy Scout troop leader stumbled upon human remains buried in a shallow grave on Sauvie Island. Advancements in DNA Technology

Fast forward to January 2023, a breakthrough occurred when a person uploaded their DNA results to GEDMatch, a genealogy database. This led to the recognition of a possible distant family member of the remains, sparking a chain of events that ultimately led to the identification of the individual.

Identification of Sandra Young

Through a collaborative effort involving genetic genealogists, family members, and law enforcement, the remains were identified as Sandra Young. Born on June 25, 1951, Young was last seen in Portland before going missing in 1968 or 1969. Her remains were found approximately 10 miles north of where she was last seen, bringing closure to a decades-old mystery.

State’s Human Identification Program Coordinator Speaks Out

Dr. Nici Vance, the state’s Human Identification Program Coordinator at the Oregon State Medical Examiner’s Office, expressed her sentiments on the case. She highlighted the diligent work put in by various parties to bring closure to Sandra Young’s story, emphasizing the innovative use of investigative genetic genealogy in solving cold cases.
