Remembering Laken Hope Riley: Funeral Service Planned for Slain Nursing Student

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – Friends and family of Laken Hope Riley will gather on Friday to honour the memory of the 22-year-old nursing student who tragically lost her life on the University of Georgia campus.

The funeral service for Riley is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Friday, March 1st, at the Woodstock City Church, as detailed in an obituary from the Poole Funeral Home.

Prior to the service, a visitation will take place at the church, where Riley was a member, located at 150 Ridgewalk Pkwy in Woodstock, from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Friday.

Described as an incredible daughter, sister, and friend, Riley’s obituary highlights her unwavering faith and the impact she had on those around her. Her family vows to honour her legacy in a profound way.

She is survived by her mother, father, two sisters, brother, maternal grandparents, and paternal grandmother, according to the obituary.

Instead of flowers, Riley’s family has requested donations to an online fundraiser established to support them with funeral expenses, establish a scholarship in Riley’s name, raise homicide awareness, or other needs during this challenging time.

The funeral home expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support and love towards the family during this difficult period.

Riley’s body was discovered on the University of Georgia campus following her reported disappearance. The suspect, 26-year-old Jose Antonio Ibarra, faces multiple charges related to Riley’s murder, including malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and more.

UGA Police Chief Jeffrey Clark stated that Riley and Ibarra had no prior connection and labelled the incident as a “crime of opportunity.”
