Man Charged with Shooting Convenience Store Worker in Chicago

A Chicago man, Jimmy Smith, has been charged with the deadly shooting of a convenience store worker during an attempted robbery in the Grand Crossing neighborhood last month. The incident occurred near the Half Moon grocery store on East 79th Street.

Arrest and Charges

Smith, aged 45, was taken into custody on Friday in the 9400 block of South Lafayette Avenue. He faces one felony count of first-degree murder, one felony count of murder, and one felony count of armed robbery with discharge of a firearm.

Details of the Crime

According to Chicago police, Smith was identified as the gunman who shot and killed 43-year-old Mohammad Suleumen Almomani on January 9th around 10:16 p.m. Almomani had just finished his shift at the store and was in his car when the robber approached. Despite trying to fight back, Almomani was tragically shot in the head.

Victim’s Background

The victim, Almomani, was a father of three who had immigrated to the United States from Jordan just five months prior to the incident. In Jordan, he had served as a police officer before moving to Chicago.

Legal Proceedings

Smith is scheduled to appear at a detention hearing on Sunday to face the charges brought against him in connection with the robbery and murder of Almomani.
