LAWRENCE COUNTY HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION LEADS TO STANDOFF IN PAOLI

A homicide investigation in Lawrence County resulted in an intense standoff in Paoli on Saturday, as law enforcement officials worked tirelessly to resolve the situation.

Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office Responds to Shooting Incident

The incident began when officers from the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a shooting at around 5:30 a.m. in the 4000 block of Fort Ritner Rd. Upon their arrival, they discovered the lifeless body of a 21-year-old male who had succumbed to a gunshot wound. The victim was later identified as Kobe Stancombe of Bedford.

Witnesses at the scene provided crucial information about two suspects, 38-year-old Casey C. Brown and 39-year-old Bradley Harper Jr., who were believed to be involved in the incident.

Standoff Unfolds in Paoli

Following leads from witnesses, law enforcement officers spotted a black 2018 Jeep Wrangler with license plate 986UAC, which was linked to the suspects. The vehicle was located by Paoli Police and the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, leading to a dramatic confrontation at a gas station in Paoli.

During the standoff, Harper exited the vehicle and was apprehended without resistance. However, Brown, the passenger, refused to cooperate with authorities and remained inside the Jeep, brandishing a handgun. Multiple law enforcement agencies, including Orleans, West Baden, and French Lick police, as well as the Indiana State Police Emergency Response Team, were called in to assist.

Resolution of the Standoff

Despite efforts to negotiate with Brown, he persisted in his defiance of police commands. In a bid to resolve the situation, authorities resorted to using non-lethal force, including pepper balls and gas canisters. The standoff concluded when Brown inflicted a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Emergency responders swiftly attended to Brown, providing life-saving measures before transferring him to IU Health Paoli and subsequently airlifting him to University of Louisville Hospital for further treatment.

Previous Encounters with Law Enforcement

Notably, Brown had been involved in previous standoffs with the police, including an incident last May where he allegedly barricaded himself in a barn outside Fort Ritner and claimed to possess an explosive device. The mugshot released during the search for Brown on Saturday bore a striking resemblance to the one from the earlier incident.

Charges and Ongoing Investigation

Brown now faces charges of murder and attempted murder, while Harper is currently being questioned by authorities. The investigation suggests that Brown, Harper, Stancombe, and an unidentified female were together in the Jeep at the time of the shooting.

Law enforcement officials have confirmed that no firearms were discharged by police officers during the standoff. The Jeep involved in the incident is undergoing processing for evidence by the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office and Indiana State Police.
