Four People Stabbed at Scottsdale Bar, Suspect Arrested

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Four individuals were injured in a stabbing incident at a bar in Scottsdale in the early hours of Saturday morning, according to the local police department.

The violent altercation took place at the Playa Bar located near McDowell and Granite Reef Roads shortly after 1 a.m. on February 24. Among the victims were two customers and two security guards, all of whom sustained varying degrees of injuries, ranging from minor to serious, as confirmed by the authorities.

Although the identities of the victims have not been disclosed, the police have stated that all the individuals affected are adults and are expected to recover from their injuries.

The suspect in the incident, identified as 42-year-old Joseph Eschief, was apprehended by law enforcement. However, prior to being taken into custody, Eschief required medical treatment at a local hospital as he had reportedly been struck on the head with a barstool during the altercation. He has since been charged with aggravated assault causing serious physical harm and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

In addition to Eschief, two other adults, 27-year-old Antonio Eschief and 46-year-old Selena Dewey, were also arrested for engaging in a physical altercation and disorderly conduct during the incident. It should be noted that these individuals were not implicated in the stabbings.

The police have refrained from disclosing the circumstances that led to the violent outburst at the bar.

‘We’ve never seen these people’

Michael Cuneo, the owner of the Playa Bar, described the venue as a local “hole-in-the-wall” establishment, noting that the individuals involved in the incident were unfamiliar to both the staff and regular patrons.

“We’ve never seen these people before. They’re not our customers and none of our customers knew them,” Cuneo remarked.

Cuneo, who has been overseeing the bar for nearly thirty years, recounted how Eschief and his companions entered the premises and sat at a table before the violent attack occurred.

“He had a knife in his hand. He reached behind the person, trying to stab him in the back of the head,” Cuneo alleged.

The bar owner went on to explain that a bystander who intervened was also stabbed, prompting the security personnel to intervene.

“The guy stabbed him ’cause the blood was dripping in his eye. At that point, he turned the barstool around and swung it and knocked the guy to the ground,” Cuneo recounted.

Cuneo expressed gratitude for the swift response of everyone involved in diffusing the situation.

“They didn’t flinch from the knife. They just tried to prevent the guy from stabbing anyone else,” he stated. “They did an admirable job.”
