Brother of UGA Murder Suspect Worked Briefly at University
ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – In a shocking turn of events, it has been revealed that the brother of the man accused of killing a nursing student on the University of Georgia campus had briefly worked for the university. Diego Ibarra, the older brother of Jose Antonio Ibarra, the main suspect in the tragic murder of Laken Hope Riley, found himself in hot water after presenting a fake green card to secure a temporary position as a dishwasher in Bolton Dining Hall at UGA on February 6, 2024.
According to university spokesperson Greg Trevor, Diego Ibarra’s employment was short-lived as he failed to provide the necessary documentation to retain his job and was subsequently terminated without receiving any payment from the University.
The plot thickened when Diego Ibarra was arrested by authorities on charges of possessing a fake green card just days after his unsuccessful employment stint at UGA. The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) revealed that Ibarra was taken into custody after a police officer identified him as a potential suspect in the homicide investigation surrounding the tragic death of Laken Hope Riley.

In a surprising twist, Diego Ibarra claimed a credible fear of return to Venezuela following his arrest, leading to his current state of detention as he awaits an asylum hearing. The DOJ further disclosed that Ibarra had a history of run-ins with the law, including previous arrests for driving under the influence, theft by shoplifting, and failure to appear for a criminal offense.
Meanwhile, Jose Antonio Ibarra, the younger brother embroiled in the murder case, faces a slew of serious charges in connection with Riley’s death, including malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and kidnapping, among others.
