Indian national dies in New York fire incident

New York: A tragic fire incident in Harlem, New York has claimed the life of a 27-year-old Indian national named Fazil Khan.

Upon learning of the unfortunate death of Mr. Khan, the Indian Embassy in New York has extended their support to his friends and family during this difficult time.

The Indian Embassy in New York stated, “Saddened to learn about the death of 27-year-old Indian national Mr. Fazil Khan in an unfortunate fire incident in Harlem, NY. India in New York is in touch with the late Mr. Fazil Khan’s family & friends. We continue to extend all possible assistance in repatriation of his mortal remains to India.”

According to the Fire Department of New York (FDNY), the fire was caused by a lithium-ion battery in a Harlem apartment building on Friday, resulting in the tragic loss of Mr. Khan’s life and injuries to 17 others. The incident also led to the displacement of dozens of residents.

Neighbour Angie Ratchford described the chaos, stating, “People were coming out of the building. The fire is at the top. Side, you see the police coming down with the people, people jumping out the window.”

Residents like Akil Jones had to escape the fire with minimal belongings, with Jones stating, “Just what I have on me. My phone, my keys and this guy.”

In a bid to save their lives, residents of the St. Nicholas Place apartment building were forced to either jump or use the fire escape during the intense blaze.

Fire officials conducted a heroic rescue operation, saving 18 people from the building. Unfortunately, 12 individuals were rushed to a local hospital, with four remaining in critical condition.

Following the fire incident, the Department of Buildings issued a full vacate order for the building, and the Red Cross is providing temporary housing to those affected at a nearby school.

FDNY Chief of Department John Hodgens described the intensity of the fire, stating, “On the third floor, one of the apartment doors was left open where the fire was. The fire was so intense, if you could imagine, flames coming out that door and blocking off the stairwell.”

Statistics from the FDNY reveal that in 2023, lithium-ion batteries were responsible for 267 fires, 150 injuries, and 18 deaths in New York City. As of Monday, there have been 24 lithium-ion battery fire investigations and eight injuries reported this year.
