An Indian national, identified as 27-year-old Fazil Khan, tragically lost his life in a residential fire that broke out in New York’s bustling Harlem neighbourhood. The Indian Embassy in New York has pledged its support and is actively liaising with Khan’s friends and family during this difficult time.

The Fire Department of New York (FDNY) has reported that the blaze was sparked by a lithium-ion battery, which resulted in the untimely demise of Khan and caused injuries to 17 others. The harrowing incident also led to dozens of residents being displaced.

Rescue Efforts and Aftermath

Amidst the chaos, multiple individuals were forced to make split-second decisions to save their lives. Some residents resorted to jumping from the building, while others were rescued using fire escapes. In total, 18 people were rescued, with 12 being rushed to a local hospital for treatment. Tragically, four victims remain in critical condition.

FDNY’s Cautionary Statistics

The FDNY highlighted the dangers posed by lithium-ion batteries, citing statistics that reveal the frequency of fires caused by such batteries in the city. In 2023 alone, lithium-ion batteries were responsible for 267 fires, resulting in 150 injuries and 18 fatalities. As of the current year, FDNY has already conducted 24 lithium-ion battery fire investigations, resulting in eight injuries.

As the investigation into the tragic incident continues, the community mourns the loss of Faizal Khan and extends heartfelt condolences to his loved ones.
