Ride-Share Driver in Miami Faces New Sexual Assault Allegations

MIAMI — A ride-share driver in Miami, initially arrested on fraud charges, is now facing new allegations of sexual assault, according to the City of Miami Police.

Danny Estalin Maurad-Avecillas, aged 49, was first arrested and charged with two counts of fraudulent credit card use and one count of fraudulent possession of identification. However, further investigation has revealed potential links to a more serious crime.

The investigation by the Miami PD revolves around a ride-share driver operating a “silver or black SUV,” targeting women during the evening hours. The suspect is believed to lure women waiting for their ride-share, intoxicating them, robbing them, and potentially sexually assaulting them.

An arrest affidavit obtained by CBS News Miami details an incident on January 12, where a victim reported leaving South Beach in an Uber and waking up naked inside a motel with no memory of how she got there.

The victim, who was visiting from California with two male friends, recounted leaving their Airbnb in Miami Beach to visit the bar Zari. After leaving the bar, one of the friends ordered an Uber described as a gray Honda HR-V to take them back to their Airbnb.

Reviewing CCTV footage from that night, investigators saw the victim and one of her friends outside Miami Beach Old City Hall. The footage captured the victim, dressed in dark clothing, entering a gray Chevrolet Traverse before driving away.

The victim informed the police that her friend had warned her about entering the wrong Uber, but she proceeded to get into the vehicle. The friend observed a Hispanic male in the driver’s seat before the car drove off.

The next day, the victim woke up in the motel, encountering a cleaning lady who informed her that her time had expired. The victim found herself naked, experiencing pain in her pelvic area and left knee. She also discovered missing cash from her purse and bruises on various parts of her body.

Subsequently, the victim visited a nearby restaurant and sought assistance from the police. Her friend corroborated her account, confirming that he had warned her about entering the incorrect Uber.

Further CCTV footage from a nearby gas station showed the suspect, identified as Maurad-Avecillas, arriving in a gray Chevy Traverse the following morning with a front passenger in dark clothing. Maurad-Avecillas, wearing a red shirt, black hat, pants, and shoes, was seen refueling his vehicle before leaving the gas station.

Additional footage depicted Maurad-Avecillas parking at the motel with the victim in the front seat. He presented the motel attendant with a credit card, returned to his car to retrieve the victim’s ID, and secured a room for six hours.

Observations by the motel attendant suggested that the victim appeared intoxicated as Maurad-Avecillas escorted her to the room. The suspect attempted to retrieve the victim’s ID again, but the attendant refused, prompting the suspect to leave the motel with the victim.

Following a thorough investigation, Miami Police confirmed the victim’s identity through CCTV footage and interviews with witnesses. The victim’s bank statements also revealed a transaction at the gas station where Maurad-Avecillas was spotted.

Authorities located and arrested Maurad-Avecillas at his Miami-Dade residence after confirming ownership of the Chevy. Miami Police encourage anyone with information or who may have been a victim to come forward and assist with the investigation by contacting the Special Victims Unit.
