Arrests Made in Connection to the Death of Chasity Nelson in Sweetwater

On the afternoon of January 26, 2024, officers from the Sweetwater Police Department responded to a welfare concern at a residence in the 500 Block of Elm Street. The concern was regarding a potentially deceased individual inside the house. Upon arrival, officers discovered the body of a 23-year-old female identified as Chasity Nelson.

The circumstances surrounding Nelson’s death prompted the Criminal Investigations Division of the Sweetwater Police Department to launch a thorough investigation into the incident.

Update on the Investigation

On February 21, 2024, detectives from the Criminal Investigations Division of the Sweetwater Police Department obtained arrest warrants for several individuals in connection to the death of Chasity Nelson. The following individuals were implicated in the investigation:

  • Francisco Martinez Gonzales “Speedy” – Charged with Murder (1st Degree Felony), Tampering with a Corpse (2nd Degree Felony), and Engaging in Organized Criminal Activity (1st Degree Felony).
  • Jose Luis Mireles – Accused of Murder (1st Degree Felony), Tampering with a Corpse (2nd Degree Felony), and Engaging in Organized Criminal Activity (1st Degree Felony).
  • Shelby Chase Kirkland – Facing charges of Murder (1st Degree Felony), Tampering with a Corpse (2nd Degree Felony), and Engaging in Organized Criminal Activity (1st Degree Felony).
  • Scott Lee Garza – Charged with Tampering with a Corpse (2nd Degree Felony) and Engaging in Organized Criminal Activity (1st Degree Felony).

By Thursday, February 22, Francisco Martinez Gonzales, Jose Luis Mireles, and Scott Lee Garza had all been apprehended and taken into custody on the charges mentioned above. However, Shelby Chase Kirkland remained at large at that time.
