Suspect in Custody as Police Investigate Death of 18-Year-Old Campbellsville University Student

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. (WBKO/Gray News) – Kentucky authorities are actively investigating the tragic death of 18-year-old Josiah Malachi Kilman, a student at Campbellsville University. The young man was found unresponsive in his dorm room, prompting Campbellsville City Police to respond to the scene around 12:43 a.m. on a Saturday morning. Kilman was rushed to the hospital but, sadly, was pronounced dead shortly after arrival, as reported by WBKO.

During the course of their investigation, authorities were able to obtain an arrest warrant for murder for 21-year-old Charles E. Escalera. Escalera was swiftly taken into custody without incident.

In response to a call about a suspicious individual in a barn on the Green and Taylor County line at approximately 5:15 p.m. on the same Saturday, authorities identified the man as Escalera and promptly apprehended him with the assistance of Kentucky State Police.

Escalera was subsequently booked at the Taylor County Detention Center on charges of murder and burglary, according to online records.

The cause of Kilman’s untimely passing has not yet been definitively determined, with police forwarding his body to the state medical examiner’s office in Louisville for a thorough autopsy.

Expressing profound sadness, University President Dr. Joseph Hopkins issued a statement acknowledging the campus community’s heartbreak in the wake of this tragedy.

To provide support for grieving students, the university’s student counseling center remains open, with dedicated counselors available to offer emotional assistance during this challenging time.
