Life in Canada

After years of striving to make a better life for herself and her family, Yuridia Flores finally achieved her dream of becoming a permanent resident of Canada in 2023. Her first job as a labourer at the massive construction project at Cambie Street and 41st Avenue was both a source of pride and a means of supporting her loved ones.

Tragic Accident

On a fateful Wednesday, tragedy struck when a load broke free from one of the cranes at the construction site, plummeting hundreds of feet and fatally striking Flores. Her common-law husband, Daniel Hernandez, who also worked at the site, received the devastating news while away for an appointment.

Heart-Wrenching Loss

Upon returning to the site, Hernandez was confronted with a scene of chaos and grief. The realization that his beloved wife had been taken from him in an instant was a blow that he struggles to comprehend. The couple’s 16-year-old son, Diego, was informed of the tragic news by his father, leaving him devastated and in disbelief.

Family’s Grief

Ingrid, Yuridia’s older daughter living in Mexico, is expected to travel to Vancouver to accompany her mother’s body back to their hometown of Acapulco for a final farewell. The family has set up a GoFundMe campaign to help cover the expenses associated with the unexpected tragedy.

Call for Safety

As investigations into the cause of the accident continue, the construction site, employing over 1,700 workers, remains under a stop-work order from WorkSafeBC. Hernandez, while not harboring anger towards any individuals, hopes that Yuridia’s untimely death will serve as a poignant reminder of the importance of workplace safety.

The community mourns the loss of a hardworking and devoted mother, taken too soon in a tragic incident that has left a family shattered and a community in mourning.

Rest in peace, Yuridia Flores.
