Democratic Consultant Hires Magician to Create Deepfake Biden Call
On February 24, 2024, it was revealed that a Democratic consultant in the United States had hired a magician from Louisiana to utilise artificial intelligence (AI) in creating a fake telephone call impersonating President Joe Biden. This shocking revelation was reported by NBC News.
The magician in question, Paul Carpenter, disclosed that he had been recruited by Steve Kramer in January to employ AI technology to replicate Biden’s voice. The purpose of this deception was to dissuade Democrats in New Hampshire from participating in the state’s primary election.
Prior to this scheme, Kramer had been involved in assisting Democratic candidate Dean Phillips with ballot access efforts.
When questioned about his involvement, Carpenter stated, “I was in a situation where someone offered me some money to do something, and I did it. There was no malicious intent. I didn’t know how it was going to be distributed.” He further revealed that creating the fabricated voice took less than 20 minutes and cost a mere $1.

Expressing his concerns, Carpenter, who hails from New Orleans, remarked, “It’s so scary that it’s this easy to do. People are not ready for it.”
Subsequently, the robocall has come under scrutiny by both New Hampshire and federal law enforcement authorities for potential violations related to voter suppression and telecommunications laws.
An investigation has been initiated into a company based in Texas that is believed to be responsible for the distribution of the deceptive calls. Officials are determined to establish a precedent against the misuse of AI-generated deepfakes in American political campaigns.
It is important to note that neither Carpenter nor Kramer have been identified as targets of the ongoing investigation.
