Cyprus Court Orders Two Men Held in Custody for People Smuggling
In Nicosia, Cyprus, a court has ruled that two men must remain in police custody for six days on suspicion of people smuggling. The individuals in question are the drivers of two boats that brought 146 Syrian refugees and one Lebanese migrant to the east Mediterranean island nation.
Suspects identified as Lebanese Nationals
The suspects, aged 19 and 21, are both Lebanese nationals according to the police. The refugees reported that they embarked from the Lebanese city of Tripoli on Thursday, Feb. 22, with each paying $2,500 for a spot on the boats.
Boats Carrying Women and Minors
One of the boats transported 30 individuals, including 6 women and 11 minors, while the second boat carried 117 people, including 8 women and 17 minors. Both vessels were spotted by police off Cape Greco on the island’s southeastern tip.
Migrants Taken to Reception Center
All the migrants were brought ashore and subsequently transferred to a migrant reception center located just outside the capital, Nicosia.
