Police Identify Remains of Teenage Girl Missing for Over 50 Years in Oregon

Authorities in Oregon have made a breakthrough in a decades-old missing person case by identifying the remains of a teenage girl who disappeared over 50 years ago. Sandra “Sandy” Young, a high school student from Portland, went missing in 1968 or 1969.

In 1970, a shallow grave containing a piece of clothing and a bone fragment was discovered on Sauvie Island. A skeleton was found in the grave, but the case went cold for more than five decades.

However, in 2023, a relative of Young uploaded their DNA test results to a genealogy site, which led investigators to contact them for further testing. Following interviews with Young’s family members and advancements in technology and DNA testing, authorities were able to match Young’s identity with the skeletal remains found in the grave.

Dr. Nici Vance, from Oregon’s Medical Examiner’s Office, commented on the breakthrough, stating, “Sandra Young has now been positively identified after 54 years. Her story is a testament to the perseverance and dedication of law enforcement and forensic experts.”
