The incident occurred in a pod-style dormitory, with shared living areas and individual bedrooms. Knopp, a senior studying music, was described as a talented guitarist and musician, while Montgomery was not a student at the university.

Jordan, a junior studying accounting, was arrested after a warrant was issued on the first day of the investigation. He was found in a residential area of Colorado Springs, a few miles from campus. Prosecutors revealed that Jordan possessed a gun in his car and also had a fully loaded AK-47. Authorities considered him a flight risk due to these findings.

An arrest affidavit detailed the events leading up to the shooting, including the threat made by Jordan over the trash dispute. Jordan had filed a request to withdraw from the university just hours before the incident. Surveillance footage captured someone fleeing the dorm building shortly after the shootings occurred.
