Man Arrested After Firing Gun During Foot Pursuit in Brevard County, Florida

A 47-year-old man is facing multiple charges after a dramatic incident in Brevard County, Florida, on Saturday morning. According to Brevard County deputies, the man ran from a traffic stop and later fired a gun during a foot pursuit.

Deputies were initially called to the scene in response to a report of a suspicious truck in the area of State Road 528 and North Banana River Drive in Merritt Island at around 9:15 a.m. Upon arrival, they found the truck unoccupied. However, as a deputy returned to their patrol vehicle to run the truck’s license plate information, a man later identified as Nickolaos Henke, entered the truck and attempted to drive away.

Following a traffic stop, deputies asked Henke for identification, but he provided a false name. When deputies attempted to investigate further, Henke fled the scene, jumping into the nearby Banana River. After a brief swim, he returned to shore and ran into a wooded area where he had set up a tent.

During the pursuit through the woods, deputies heard Henke claim to have a gun and then heard a gunshot. Henke was seen running with a firearm, which he eventually dropped. He was apprehended by deputies as he attempted to flee towards State Road 528.

Two deputies sustained minor injuries during the pursuit and were treated at a local hospital before being released. It was later discovered that Henke had an active warrant for failing to appear in court for a previous driving under the influence charge.

Henke now faces a range of charges, including aggravated assault against law enforcement with a firearm, driving with a suspended license (3rd or subsequent offense), resisting arrest without violence, improper exhibition of a dangerous weapon, and providing false information to law enforcement. He is currently being held at the Brevard County jail on a $32,000 bond.
