Heartbreaking Vigil Held in Memory of Nex Benedict in Edmond, Oklahoma
More than two dozen individuals gathered at All Saints Episcopal Church in McAlester for a poignant vigil honouring Nex Benedict, a nonbinary teenager who tragically passed away following an altercation in a high school bathroom. The vigil was organised by the McAlester Rainbow Connection and was the first of over a dozen vigils scheduled nationwide through Monday.

Tragic Loss of Nex Benedict
Nex Benedict, a 16-year-old student from Oklahoma, lost their life the day after a physical altercation at Owasso High School. identified as nonbinary and preferring they/them pronouns, Benedict was involved in a confrontation with three girls in the school bathroom. The incident escalated after Benedict poured water on the girls in response to their taunting.
Community Support and Remembrance
Matt Blancett, from the Rainbow Connection, stressed the significance of holding a vigil in McAlester, particularly in light of the murder of transgender man Dustin Parker in 2020. Blancett highlighted the importance of unity within the LGBTQ+ community and the need for support during challenging times.
Calls for Justice and Investigation
Following Benedict’s passing, their mother, Sue Benedict, expressed a desire to press charges in connection to the altercation. However, the responding officer indicated that the court would likely view the incident as a mutual fight. Despite initial intentions to pursue legal action, Mrs. Benedict later opted to focus on addressing student issues at Owasso High School.
Police Investigation and Autopsy Results
A police search warrant revealed that investigators collected evidence at the school, including photographs from the bathroom where the fight occurred. While the warrant initially suggested a felony murder investigation, preliminary autopsy results indicated that Benedict’s death was not directly linked to the altercation. The police department is awaiting toxicology reports for further clarity on the circumstances surrounding Benedict’s passing.
