Jaahnavi Kandula, a 23-year-old Indian student, tragically lost her life when she was struck by a police vehicle driven by Officer Dave while crossing a street in Seattle on January 23.

New Delhi Seeks Review of Decision in Jaahnavi Kandula Case

India has formally requested a review of the decision made by the King County Prosecutor’s Office to not press criminal charges against the Seattle police officer involved in the incident that led to the death of Indian student Jaahnavi Kandula.

The police officer, who has been identified as Officer Dave, was cleared of charges by the King County Prosecutor’s Office citing insufficient evidence.

The Indian consulate in Seattle has raised strong concerns with local authorities, including the Seattle Police, urging for appropriate action to be taken. The case has now been forwarded to the Seattle City Attorney’s office for further review, as confirmed by the Consulate.

The Consulate stated, “We are awaiting the conclusion of Seattle Police’s internal investigation and will continue to closely monitor the developments in the case.”

Official Statement from the King County Prosecutor’s Office

In a statement released on Wednesday, the King County Prosecuting Attorney expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of Jaahnavi Kandula, acknowledging the impact it has had on communities in King County and beyond.

Jaahnavi Kandula was fatally struck by a police vehicle driven by Officer Dave as she was crossing a street, resulting in her being thrown a significant distance due to the high speed at which the vehicle was travelling.

Controversial Bodycam Footage

Footage from a body-worn camera worn by Seattle Police Officer Daniel Auderer, who was not involved in the incident, captured disturbing comments made about the collision. Officer Auderer’s insensitive remarks and dismissive attitude towards the tragic event have been widely condemned.

The King County Prosecuting Attorney, Leesa Manion, labelled Officer Auderer’s comments as “appalling and deeply troubling”, asserting that such behaviour undermines public trust in law enforcement.

Disciplinary Action Against Officer Auderer

Following the release of the controversial footage, Officer Auderer was removed from active patrol duty and reassigned to a non-operational role. He faces potential disciplinary action, including suspension or termination, pending further investigation by the Office of Police Accountability.

Investigation Findings

Reports suggest that the speed at which Officer Dave was driving played a significant role in the collision, as it did not allow sufficient time for either party to react and prevent the accident.

It was revealed that Officer Dave was responding to a priority call from the Seattle Fire Department regarding a drug overdose, but did not have his siren activated continuously. Despite activating his emergency lights, the officer’s actions have been scrutinised for their contribution to the tragic outcome.

Subsequent investigations did not find any evidence of impairment in Officer Dave, and a drug recognition expert confirmed this assessment at the scene of the incident.

Remembering Jaahnavi Kandula

Jaahnavi Kandula, a graduate student at Northeastern University in Seattle, was posthumously awarded her degree by the university in recognition of her academic achievements. Her untimely passing has left a lasting impact on the community and those who knew her.

The case continues to unfold as authorities strive to bring justice for Jaahnavi Kandula and her grieving family.
