Drug Bust in Greenfield, Indiana

GREENFIELD, Ind. — In a surprising turn of events, two men from California are now facing felony drug charges after a routine traffic stop in Greenfield, Indiana led to a major drug bust. The incident took place on Interstate 70, near Mount Comfort Road, where an Indiana State Trooper noticed a semi-truck driving suspiciously.

Suspicious Activity on Interstate 70

The trooper’s attention was piqued by the semi-truck’s erratic behaviour, prompting him to pull over the vehicle for further investigation. Upon inspecting the semi, the trooper discovered a logbook violation that raised red flags. Sensing criminal activity, the trooper requested permission to search the vehicle, which the driver granted.

Discovery of Cocaine in Onion Boxes

During the search, the trooper made a shocking discovery – nearly 200 pounds of cocaine hidden inside boxes of onions in the back of the semi-truck. The illicit substance, later confirmed to be cocaine, weighed a total of 184 pounds. The driver, identified as Jose N. Perez, and his passenger, Miguel Rodriguez, were promptly arrested on drug charges.

Arrest and Charges

Perez, 66, and Rodriguez, 60, both residents of California, were taken into custody and booked on possession of and dealing in cocaine charges. Perez is facing a level 2 felony charge, while Rodriguez is charged with a level 3 felony.

Prosecution and Legal Proceedings

Following the arrest, evidence was collected and presented to Hancock County Prosecutor Brent Eaton, who filed charges against Perez and Rodriguez. Scheduled Hearings

Initial court hearings for Perez and Rodriguez have been scheduled for Friday, Feb. 23, where they will face further legal proceedings related to the drug charges. The semi-truck involved in the incident was towed for a thorough search, further aiding in the investigation.
