Suspect in Custody for Homicide of University Student in Athens

ATHENS, Ga. (WANF/Gray News) – Following a tragic incident on the University of Georgia’s campus, a suspect has been apprehended by police in connection with the homicide of 22-year-old nursing student Laken Hope Riley.

Riley, a student at the Augusta University College of Nursing in Athens, was found deceased on the university grounds. University of Georgia Police have identified the suspect as 26-year-old Jose Antonio Ibarra, a resident of Athens who is not a U.S. citizen.

Charges against Ibarra include malice murder, felony murder, aggravated battery, aggravated assault, false imprisonment, kidnapping, hindering a 911 call, and concealing the death of another individual.

UGA Police Chief Jeffrey Clark stated that Ibarra likely did not have any prior connection to Riley, suggesting that the crime was opportunistic in nature.

The cause of Riley’s death has been determined as blunt force trauma, as confirmed by law enforcement officials.

The collaborative efforts of various law enforcement agencies, including the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, Clarke County Sheriff’s Office, Georgia State Patrol, Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), and federal authorities, facilitated the arrest of the suspect. University of Georgia Police Chief Clark emphasised that while the arrest has been made, the investigation is ongoing, with searches still being conducted at the suspect’s residence.

Despite the tragic incident, authorities have assured the public that there is currently no immediate threat to safety following the suspect’s apprehension.

Shortly before noon on Friday, three individuals were taken into custody at the Argo apartment complex near the university, located in close proximity to where Riley’s body was discovered.
